We would also really appreciate your support on Tuesday afternoon during the International Couple of the Year presentations as Tina and I get to go onstage as the 2020-2021 Northwest ICOY.  We are planning a group ride down and back.

From the Directors:Happy Spring Everyone!

As you all know, May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month.   This is a great reminder for any driver, whether it’s in a vehicle or on a bike.  We talk a lot about making sure we are seen and making sure we wear our safety gear.  We have opportunities to partake in Shiny Side Up’s (formerly known as Parking Lot Practices) and even ARC and TRC courses to help keep our skills sharp.   You see a big part of Motorcycle Safety Awareness depends on us.  Always being in the right frame of mind when we ride, not being tired, not being distracted, and riding safely.  These are the things we CAN control.  What we can’t control is the other drivers on the roadway.  We can prepare ourselves to be able to “interact” with them and do everything we can to be seen and keep ourselves safe.  Whether that means simply making sure your lane position is visible to them or having to practice your maneuvers because of their actions – it begins with you.  Being alert to the traffic around you, the hazards you may see, and the unknown’s that get thrown our way are all part of riding safely.  Especially as we get out riding more, let’s make sure we are constantly aware of our surroundings!

A great opportunity that comes from May being Motorcycle Safety Awareness month, is the push for more education opportunities in our communities.  Our Motorist Awareness Program is a vital key for our sharing with other drivers.  Take advantage of any chance you may have to hold a Motorist Awareness event – no matter how big or small – to help educate other drivers who share our roadway.  It can be as simple as a folding table with pamphlets at your local grocery store or getting the chance to educate a Driver’s Education class.   How about a MAP table at your fundraiser?

Speaking of getting out riding more, Chapter H started our Thursday night rides on April 15th.   We had 3 bikes (4 riders), and all wore safety gear.  I (Tina) was the only female that joined their spouse….Tom told me that some wives are smarter than others!  It was a brisk 51 mile ride, but it sure felt good to get out.  We enjoyed a nice ride up around Lake Wisconsin over through Poynette and Deforest, ending up at Culver’s in Waunakee.   Looking forward to more adventures! Stay safe! Bruce & Tina Gebhard

From the Assistant Directors: Denise and I were out for a drive today (Sunday March 21st.)  While not having the trike and switching to a convertible is a bit of a change we absolutely loved driving with the top down and driving some nice twisty roads between Lone Rock and Spring Green.  We justified this as essential research for rides when the weather warms up.  Now that my time has freed up with retirement we plan on devoting more time to this ride destination research.

While driving through Madison on the way back we saw a motorcycle that was in need of a new tire.  This served as a reminder to all to thoroughly check out your ride before going out for the first time.

This quick checklist should help (from: http://www.motoreagles.com/blog/get-motorcycle-ready-spring/ ):

  • Check the air pressure and carefully inspect both tires for signs of wear, including bulges, flat spots, or cracks in the sidewalls.
  • If you rode your bike hard and put it away wet, you’re probably going to need to drain the fuel and clean up any brown gunk or other residue that remains. As for engine oil, if you changed the oil and filter last fall, you’re probably good to go.
  • Those of you who used a battery tender or trickle charger during the polar vortex should be fine, but you should still check for any corrosion and make sure all connections are secure.

ACTIVITES FOR THIS MONTH:
Friday lunch bunch – cancelled until further notice due to covid 19.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
Saturday March 20th is Duck pin bowling (mini bowling) at Koz’s in Milwaukee with chapter N, and possibly some folks from chapters G and F. Right now we have 6 people going. Contact me asap if you’re interested. (Koz’s is a smaller place, so 6 foot distancing is not very feasible)

Saturday March 6th, chapter E is having a MFA (Medic First Aide) class at the Cambria WI fire station. There is plenty of room to maintain all social distancing rules. The class has been modified to allow for all covid 19 safety precautions. This is an excellent opportunity to either become certified, or to renew your existing certification. Contact the instructor, Jan Williams with chapter E by March 1st. Cost is $20 per person. Jan’s # is 920-348-5048.

April 11th following our social at Monona Gardens, we will be hosting the mini golf “Chapter Challenge” at Vitense golf land. Tee off time set for 11:30. Cost is $8.00 a person. They have one indoor course, but if it turns out to be a beautiful day, they have two outdoor courses. This will be immediately following our social. The challenge trophy will go to the chapter that has the lowest average strokes per player. (4 persons minimum) In 2019 we had 29 people attend, let’s see if we can get 40 this year! Social distancing rules will be followed. If we are indoors, management will be limiting the number of people on the course, so please allow some extra time in your day to play! (not applicable to the outdoor courses)

Date to be determined; Cal will be setting up a “Shiny Side Up” (formerly Parking Lot Practice) event for us to go out in a safe environment and “knock some of the rust off” of our riding skills. Stay tuned for more information. This is an informal event, and is open to anyone that wants to participate (including non-members).

From the Directors:
Hello Chapter H members and friends!

The first thing we want to let you know is that Congratulations are in order for Tom & Jackie Barman. They have been selected as the 2021 Chapter H Couple of the Year! We are very proud of them, and also pleased to have them as a part of our chapter team.

We don’t know about all of you, but we are certainly ready for spring and riding season to get here! It’s not only the riding season we are looking forward to, it’s life heading back to a more normal status as far as the pandemic goes. It’s looking forward to getting together with our friends to socialize and ride. It’s traveling to other GWRRA events. We will be attending several of the neighboring states rally’s, and Wing Ding. Please join us for a lot of fun and some great new adventures!

If you have not heard already, the official word came down a couple of days ago that Wing Ding is officially a GO! A couple of notes in that regard. The chapter (Aka John & Denise) will be planning a scenic group ride down and back for anyone that’s interested (plan for 2 days each way). Let us know asap if you are going to wing ding, and if you will be a part of the ride down and or back. Secondly, the district will be manning the registration table on June 30th. Frank and Sharon are looking for volunteers to help. I did it last year and had a lot of fun with it. Contact the Jacksons at, frankj64155@yahoo.com if you are able to help out! Shifts are only 1 hour each from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Tuesday afternoon at Wing Ding, they will be presenting the 2020-21 and 2021-22 International Couples of the Year. Tina and I will have our time onstage and would love to have all of you there to be a part of it with us. We are only there because of all the support and encouragement we have received from all of you, so Thank You!

Stay safe, the end is in sight!
