June 10, 2021 Ride

On Thursday, June 10th, Chapter H ventured out on a VERY hot 80-mile ride.  We rode from Windsor, WI via back roads thru Wyocena, WI ending at A&W in Portage, WI.  There we enjoyed cold drinks, food, and of course ice cream.  We had 6 bikes with 8 riders, who were members.  2 bikes who joined us from the beginning of the ride were non- members with potential of becoming new members.  In total we had 8 bikes with 10 riders.  All were wearing safety gear.

Chapter H rides- Wing Riding Wisconsin

What do Goldwings and Brats have in common?

Any GWRRA member will tell you we love to eat brats and we love to ride to brat fries. Chapter H has had a chance to meet both in the last few weeks. A brat fry and a ride to 3 Chapter events. Could there be anything better?

  • On April 24th Chapter H traveled to Chapter Q’s brat fry in Wausau. We had 3 bikes and one car with 7 Chapter H members all wearing proper safety gear brave the rain and cold. We had fun enjoying the cranberry bogs and ginseng fields as we traveled through several of our northern counties. Not the best of rides but good brats and fun with Chapter Q.

Thanks to Bruce Gebhard for leading us through many roads that my husband John Scott had never been on even though he had lived in Marathon and Portage Counties.

  • Our return ride on April 24th we had 3 bikes and 1 car all wearing proper safety gear that enjoyed a more direct route home.
  •  On April 29th we had an evening ride. There were 4 bikes with 7 Chapter H members all wearing proper safety gear.   We rode from Madison to Fort Atkinson, to Lake Mills, and Cottage Grove.  We ended at Culvers on the East Side of Madison enjoying a little evening snack.
  • On May 1 we had 4 bikes and 1 car with 9 Chapter H members all wearing proper safety gear travel to Chapter E brat fry in Randolph for our breakfast brat. True breakfast of champions is a brat and sauerkraut. Yum.  From Randolph we traveled to Chapter C in Fond du Lac for our lunch brat.
  • Our return ride on May 1st we had 3 bikes and 1 car (7 Chapter H members) all wearing proper safety gear.  It was a great ride that included a trip around the east side of Lake Winnebago before heading back to Madison,  Special thanks to John Scott for planning a ride also with many back roads including a windy trip through the Horicon Marsh.

Chapter E was wondering if I would rate the best brat and so did Chapter C. I did joke that my decision could be swayed with a free brat. Neither Chapter E or Chapter C took up my offer, so I have no opinion as to which brat was better.

I guess the decision was that there is no bad brat fry if sponsored by a GWRRA Chapter. Thank you to Chapters, Q, E and C for feeding us. We enjoyed the ride, the food and seeing other GWRRA members.

  • May 14th while at Dust Off, Chapter H had 3 bikes and 1 car with 6 members all wearing proper safety gear enjoy a ride up and around Lake Winnebago.  It was some fabulous back roads with nice curves and turns.

So grateful that 2021 is starting off better than 2020.

Denise Scott

From the Directors:Happy Spring Everyone!

As you all know, May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month.   This is a great reminder for any driver, whether it’s in a vehicle or on a bike.  We talk a lot about making sure we are seen and making sure we wear our safety gear.  We have opportunities to partake in Shiny Side Up’s (formerly known as Parking Lot Practices) and even ARC and TRC courses to help keep our skills sharp.   You see a big part of Motorcycle Safety Awareness depends on us.  Always being in the right frame of mind when we ride, not being tired, not being distracted, and riding safely.  These are the things we CAN control.  What we can’t control is the other drivers on the roadway.  We can prepare ourselves to be able to “interact” with them and do everything we can to be seen and keep ourselves safe.  Whether that means simply making sure your lane position is visible to them or having to practice your maneuvers because of their actions – it begins with you.  Being alert to the traffic around you, the hazards you may see, and the unknown’s that get thrown our way are all part of riding safely.  Especially as we get out riding more, let’s make sure we are constantly aware of our surroundings!

A great opportunity that comes from May being Motorcycle Safety Awareness month, is the push for more education opportunities in our communities.  Our Motorist Awareness Program is a vital key for our sharing with other drivers.  Take advantage of any chance you may have to hold a Motorist Awareness event – no matter how big or small – to help educate other drivers who share our roadway.  It can be as simple as a folding table with pamphlets at your local grocery store or getting the chance to educate a Driver’s Education class.   How about a MAP table at your fundraiser?

Speaking of getting out riding more, Chapter H started our Thursday night rides on April 15th.   We had 3 bikes (4 riders), and all wore safety gear.  I (Tina) was the only female that joined their spouse….Tom told me that some wives are smarter than others!  It was a brisk 51 mile ride, but it sure felt good to get out.  We enjoyed a nice ride up around Lake Wisconsin over through Poynette and Deforest, ending up at Culver’s in Waunakee.   Looking forward to more adventures! Stay safe! Bruce & Tina Gebhard

From the Assistant Directors: Denise and I were out for a drive today (Sunday March 21st.)  While not having the trike and switching to a convertible is a bit of a change we absolutely loved driving with the top down and driving some nice twisty roads between Lone Rock and Spring Green.  We justified this as essential research for rides when the weather warms up.  Now that my time has freed up with retirement we plan on devoting more time to this ride destination research.

While driving through Madison on the way back we saw a motorcycle that was in need of a new tire.  This served as a reminder to all to thoroughly check out your ride before going out for the first time.

This quick checklist should help (from: http://www.motoreagles.com/blog/get-motorcycle-ready-spring/ ):

  • Check the air pressure and carefully inspect both tires for signs of wear, including bulges, flat spots, or cracks in the sidewalls.
  • If you rode your bike hard and put it away wet, you’re probably going to need to drain the fuel and clean up any brown gunk or other residue that remains. As for engine oil, if you changed the oil and filter last fall, you’re probably good to go.
  • Those of you who used a battery tender or trickle charger during the polar vortex should be fine, but you should still check for any corrosion and make sure all connections are secure.
